As a small town, Ambleside has not been colonised by High Street chain stores. But because they cater for millions of tourists, independent retailers in Ambleside have been able to develop successful shops selling a wide range of goods not easy to find elsewhere.

Kendal has some fine shops which cater for everyone from high street names, factory outlets, craft shops, speciality shops and traditional markets. The latest shopping area is the Elephant Yard.
